The monthly payment
Your premium is the amount paid each month for insurance coverage. You may also pay part of the cost when receiving care. Paying the premium does not mean you have met the plan’s deductible.
What you pay when using care
A deductible is what you pay for covered services subject to that deductible before the plan begins paying its share. Some services are covered before you meet it. A copayment is generally a fixed amount for a covered service; coinsurance is a percentage of the covered service’s cost.
Check the family rules
A family plan may have both individual deductibles and a family deductible. Some plans have separate deductibles for certain services, such as prescriptions. Check how these amounts work together before estimating household costs.
This guide is general education. Your own coverage decisions call for a review of your needs, eligibility, and available options.
