A common format for comparing plans

The Summary of Benefits and Coverage, or SBC, gives you a structured overview of a health plan’s benefits, costs, and important limitations. The consistent format lets you compare similar information across plans.

What to review

Look for the deductible, out-of-pocket limit, costs for common services, exclusions, and network information. The SBC includes coverage examples. These illustrate how coverage can work; they do not predict your personal medical bills.

Go beyond the summary

The SBC does not replace the full policy or governing plan documents. Those documents ultimately control coverage. Ask the insurer for details when something is unclear, and check that you are reading documents for the right plan and coverage period.

This guide is general education. Your own coverage decisions call for a review of your needs, eligibility, and available options.
