What Part D does

Part D helps cover prescription drugs through private plans that follow Medicare rules. You may get it through a separate Medicare drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.

Read the drug list

A formulary is a plan’s list of covered prescription drugs. Plans have their own lists, so finding a medicine on one plan’s list does not establish coverage under another. Check the current list for the exact plan you are reviewing.

Coverage can have requirements

A listed drug may still have prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits. These can mean approval is needed, another covered treatment must be tried first, or the amount covered is limited. Confirm the applicable requirements and pharmacy network with the plan. Discuss treatment decisions with your prescriber.

This guide is general education. Your own coverage decisions call for a review of your needs, eligibility, and available options.
